2008 Summer Camp Highlights
2008 Summer Camp – One of the “Best Ever”
Troop 3’s 86th annual summer camp the week of July 19-26, was once again filled with crisp bugle calls echoing throughout the forested hills around Camp Smitty, on the beautiful Hughes River.
While evenings were spent enjoying “How Hows”, laughter, and singing around the nightly campfires, a week of terrific weather made it possible to “max out” an activity program that emphasized learning and practicing various Scouting skills.
From sunup to sundown, timely bugle calls kept the daily routine running on schedule like a “finely oiled” watch. In addition to enhancing their Scouting skills and competing for the daily inspection award, the campers enjoyed a treasure hunt, athletic meet, rifle shooting, string burning, hiking, and a night of star gazing that included viewing the “moons of Saturn” through a telescope.
Down at the waterfront, the warm water and perfect river level provided for refreshing swims and much use of the canoes and kayaks. Mid-week, many fun-filled hours on the river were provided via a daylong canoe and kayak trip that tested everyone’s boating skills.
Friday night’s final campfire program, which included singing and presentation of the “best of the best” skits of the week, also recognized each of the Scouts for their advancement accomplishments during summer camp. In the “Special Patrol Awards” category, “Honor Patrol” went to the Otters, and the Stag’s in a tightly contested race with the Foxes won the “Inspection Award”.
While our 44th year at Camp Smitty is now history, we are in need of troop alums like you to serve as an adult leader at our 2009 summer camp, which will be held the week of July 18-25, or July 25 – August 1st.
Troop 3’s summer wilderness camp is an experience like no other! Plan now to join us for a week of fun, fellowship, and laughs, as we once again revert to “roughing it” in one of the most beautiful and isolated places in West Virginia.
Now that you have been invited to serve, the next step is up to you. Your favor of a positive reply via email to Scouting@troop3wv.org will be much appreciated!!
